International Literacy Day was enthusiastically celebrated at Pehli Kiran Schools to reinforce and emphasize the need to end learning poverty – especially among children from marginalized, underprivileged communities.
Ms. Saada Bilgrami, a renowned educationist and motivational speaker, graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Several other dedicated professionals, working in the development sector, also honored us with their presence, along with our own Trustees.
The highlights of the event were the beautifully enacted role plays and tableaus performed by students to enlighten the audience on the importance of literacy and education. The day was also marked by award of certificates and prizes to the high achievers of Grade 5 and 8 board exams in recognition of their commitment and hard work.
Speaking at the occasion, Ms. Saada Bilgrami expressed great appreciation for the unwavering commitment of our children. She elucidated that literacy and education are two sides of the same coin; while literacy is learning, education is its implementation. This combination then leads us to wisdom which nurtures the human being. We are very grateful for her gracious offer to conduct special sessions with our children and teachers on education’s deeper, broader aspects.
Mr. M. Yousaf Khan, CEO, Friends of Environment, as a guest speaker praised the uphill journey of Pehli Kiran Schools. He lauded the confidence, eloquence and leadership skills of our students and marveled at their success stories. He was highly appreciative of the fact that despite limited exposure and resources, and environmental constraints, PKS students were excelling in all fields. As a goodwill gesture he offered to donate plants to our schools – to provide a healthy learning environment.
PKS teachers also received heartfelt appreciation for their unstinting dedication to promote learning – despite their harsh working conditions. “Teachers are the thread that creates the fabric”, expressed Mr. Mansoor Khan, Trustee, JAQ Education Trust.
Mr. Mohsin Alim Qazi, Trustee JAQ Education Trust, iterated the importance of inquisitive learning so as to inculcate the spirit of intrinsic motivation within students
The event was a testament to the untiring efforts of our staff and students – on their efforts to *Transform Literacy Spaces * and achieve successful learning outcomes.
Let us together build new destinies for the forgotten children of Pakistan.
