Pehli Kiran Schools 3 began in 1999 with 80 students, now has grown to 300 students, 41% girls. Over the last three years, 182 students from School 3 successfully pursued further education with enrolment at mainstream schools. We have been able to achieve this through the Zakat (charity) and generous donations of our kind contributors.

Classes at PKS-3 range from PlayGroup to Grade 5. The primary method of instruction is based on Montessori Pedagogy, which teaches respect for the right of every child to be different from the other. PKS students taking the Grade 5 national test have a 92% pass rate. Children are given free nutritional supplements, uniforms, and instruction on basic hygiene.

Our school aims to alter the lives of street children, giving them back their childhood and ensuring no kid is abandoned from their basic right to education. Many pupils have to work to support their poor families, therefore, we offer both day and evening classes.

PKS-3 serves a community of over 800 destitute households, some of whom moved to Islamabad 32 years ago, but never sent their children to school – before the arrival of PKS. Male members work mostly as daily wage painters, construction workers, while female members work as housemaids. Families originate largely from the Punjab province, so languages spoken include Punjabi and Urdu.

This was a rough neighborhood, where children, who worked mostly on collecting scrap, were recruited into street gangs, drugs, and other undesirable activities from a young age. PKS-3 has brought about much change in attitudes, behavior, and habits – from teaching basic hygiene and courtesies, to a gradual shift away from objectionable pursuits. PKS has also provided this community with hand-pumps, as they had no access to water.
